Whatare the Characters in End of Anime
I've been an anime fan since the 90s and take blogged about anime since 2010. I've seen information technology all, done it all, and gotten the t-shirt.
Why Is Shounen And then Pop?
Shounen is the most popular genre of anime worldwide. The genre comes from the Japanese discussion for boy, so it means any anime aimed at teenage or younger boys. Despite the proper name referring to that target demographic, shounen anime seems to accept a mass appeal, attracting fans of all ages and genders. The fast-paced action, heartwarming moments of friendship, and cool-looking fight scenes all contribute to this popularity.
The ability of shounen as a genre too comes from its emphasis on success through conclusion, hard work, and self-improvement. Shounen is an optimistic genre near how anyone can achieve anything through hard work and grit.

"Naruto," "Bleach," and "One Slice" were grouped together because of their mega-success, every bit the "Large 3."
Explaining the Popularity of the Large Three and Other Popular Shounen Anime
In anime fan communities, the "Big Three" were the top shounen manga/anime series that were so massively popular they were impossible to get away from, especially in anime fan circles. That used to mean Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. They were grouped together because of their mega-success. They dominated conventions and anime forums. They also had a profound impact on what non-anime fans saw anime as. The shows were accessible to, and popular with, even people who knew nothing about anime, and didn't know nearly whatsoever other anime.
Perhaps the "Big Three" were merely the three nigh pop or well-known Weekly Shounen Jump manga, but I don't take that view. Non everyone reads manga, or that magazine in particular. The "Big Three" mostly practice come from Weekly Shounen Spring, simply their Western popularity comes from appearing on mainstream tv set (and/or major streaming sites) in the The states, UK, Canada, and then on.
Why were these three anime so overwhelmingly successful, eclipsing shows with ameliorate writing, better characters, and better pacing? A lot of anime fans and critics have wondered that.
The answer becomes more clear when you ask non "Why are these shows and so popular?" but, "What is it these shows exercise that adds value to many viewers' lives?"
When y'all do that, you're getting into the mindset of the real fans of these shows. If you lot focus on what these shows get incorrect, yous will of course be baffled by their popularity. Y'all might come away cynical, thinking anybody is just too stupid to detect the flaws you meet. But if we instead try to see what these shows do right, we tin can gain important insight into what every evidence or story ought to practise to proceeds popularity, and sympathise that the fans of these shows take reasons to exist fans - and it'southward not because they're dumb!
All successful shounen shows, and many popular anime that are not shounen, give the audience a function they may desire for themselves. The following table will illustrate how each popular shounen anime has a corresponding part. Fans want to put themselves in this office.
Anime | Role |
---|---|
One Piece | Pirate |
Bleach | Shinigami/Soul Reaper |
Naruto | Ninja |
Attack on Titan | Soldier |
Fairy Tail | Mage |
Pokemon | Trainer, Breeder (Other Roles Added Later) |
Soul Eater | Meister/Weapon |
My Hero Academia | Hero |
Hunter x Hunter | Hunter |
So on. Successful, iconic anime give teenagers (the master demographic) what they desire most: a sense of identity. With that identity comes a role, a purpose, a reason to exist. Information technology besides comes with friendship and fellowship, something a lot of teens long for and struggle to find. Teens are looking for their place in the world, and fiction gives them a place that, while non ever glamorous, is always interesting.
The biggest names in shounen anime explore the role as a major theme to the story. They ask, what does it mean to be a ________? Rival characters represent the wrong fashion to make full the bear witness'due south major role. Villains claiming the assumptions and weaknesses of the role. Successful shounen succeed primarily past creating a function compelling enough that lots of fans who watch the show desire to be that thing, whatever it is.
The stronger their desire to take part in the roles the heroes of the anime embody, the greater their obsession with the bear witness. This creates the infamous dedication anime fans have to things like cosplay, trade collection, online give-and-take, and sometimes forming an angry mob. It comes from the adolescent demand, which is likewise a need of many people regardless of age, to find a sense of purpose, identity, and a identify to belong.
Video games too do this. In Skyrim, I liked having the option to bring together a number of guilds and factions, specializing in different types of quests and missions. The game, like following an anime, lets y'all forge your own (fictional) sense of identity.

A factor that considerably boosted the mainstream US popularity of the "Big Iii" shounen was being on Cartoon Network. Developed Swim is a great way to reach teenagers and young adults alike. It tin can aid any show gain a massive audience, compared to what other anime get through DVD sales and online streaming. The "Big Three" are from a time when cable, not online streaming, was the chief style most people were watching anime in the w. Being on cablevision gave them all the "spoils" in terms of mass popularity. At present, anime is fractured among various streaming platforms so it'southward a fiddling more complex. There are also more new varieties and niches within shounen that have made the genre more complicated.
So there is no new next "Big Three". And there'south not going to exist.
Another thing that helped the "Big Three" dominate was running for so long. This allows the networks to have a huge number of rerun episodes on hand to fill upwards dead air time cheaply, and information technology also gives the show more fourth dimension to get discovered and talked almost. It makes the fandoms of the show or manga feel similar real, permanent parts of the fans' lives. A 10-15 episode anime might be fun on its own, but it usually won't be popular a flavour or two afterwards it ends. When it's over, anime fans will move on to the next big thing.
Anime That Could've Been in the "Large Three"
A confusing problem with labeling One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach as the "Large 3" creates an artificial rivalry between these anime (similar the console wars), and excludes other anime, even other popular shounen anime. One that constantly got excluded, despite at one time existence almost every bit popular, was Fairy Tail. At 1 time, it also would have been necessary to include Dragon Ball Z in a "Large 3," just while the Dragon Ball franchise continues, it is falling somewhat off the map. What should and shouldn't be included equally a big shounen series e'er changes.
There take been many popular shounen anime series, non just iii. The enduring popularity of Weekly Shounen Jump is a testament to the genre's staying power, even as series come and go. Just what'due south happened is the genre has expanded and diversified. For example, Tiger and Bunny is a shounen virtually superheroes, but the characters are adults, non teenagers, and it'south not almost school equally such. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure mixes the action of a shounen with mystery and more than character-driven drama. Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul mix shounen and horror elements. Anime genres that were fixed for decades when what got in front of eyeballs was adamant by a few major TV networks are now freer, looser, and more diverse in an internet era.
Is At that place a Current "Big Three"? Not Really!
If I was pressed for a currently-airing replacement "Big Iii," I would have to go with Assail on Titan, My Hero Academia, and Black Clover. The latter is the one I have the most doubts most. My Hero Academia is the undoubted king of shounen right now. But people are nevertheless into 1 Slice. Boruto, a spin-off of Naruto Shippuden featuring Naruto'southward son, keeps the Naruto franchise on top. Black Clover has a strong following. It's debatable whether Attack on Titan should count as shounen, but its effect on the anime customs is undeniable and unstoppable.
Other top shounen manga right now include Tokyo Ghoul:re, The Promised Neverland, and One-Punch Man. Nosotros currently can't easily wrap a neat little bow around any three shounen anime and telephone call them the "New Big Three."
My Personal five Favorite Shounen
I don't hate the shounen genre, but it isn't my favorite.
Having said that, my all-time top five shounen series would be:
- YuYu Hakusho
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Pokemon
- Inuyasha
- Hunter 10 Hunter
Yes, that puts the same manga author on there twice (Yoshihiro Tagashi, of Hunter 10 Hunter and YuYu Hakusho), but he deserves it! The main reasons I like all of these shounen are their stellar relationship-building between characters. These shows accept grapheme growth. Characters who are very different at start learn to get along and work together over time. I know that when I say relationships, people retrieve of the romance genre, but friendship relationships that build upwards over a long time are a staple of adept shounen.
Popularity is a Value Judgment Created by Gild
Dearest or hate it, anything sufficiently popular becomes worthy of analysis by virtue of being pop. That'southward because artists and writers want to know what makes the most pop works of fiction appeal to the nigh readers and viewers. Furthermore, popularity is a value judgment social club places on works of fiction. For good or bad, popularity is a kind of golden star, a postage of society's approving. As such, popular fiction shows what society values, and obscure fiction shows what is fringe or aberrant to society. This makes the study of popular fiction not merely about media criticism, but an anthropological study of current social mores as well.
The popularity of shounen anime speaks to a nearly universal, but more than common to boyhood, human need for a sense of purpose. People want a clear goal, clear enemies, and an piece of cake-to-understand strategy for beating them. Video games, shounen anime, as well as other types of fiction, fulfill these psychological needs people have. Instead of focusing on the outmoded concept of the "Big Three," information technology's at present time to explore the shounen genre as information technology grows, matures, and becomes more various.
